Chairs that are woven with machines are comfortable to repair. Cane sheets are sold in various lengths like feet and widths. The sheets are 12 to 24 inches wide. You have to purchase the caning wedges. You need to ask the salesperson how many wedges you need. It would be best if you also bought some other equipment like screwdriver, hammer, utility knife, carpenters glue, spray lacquer handy and sandpaper. Now follow these steps to replace the cane seat.
Step 1
You need to precut the cane sheet that extends one inch beyond the groove on all four sides of the chair. You also need to purchase a spline which is a ribbon-like material that comes in various sizes. You need to know the correct length of the spline before doing this project.
Step 2
Soak the cane sheet in warm water for about an hour. Soaking the cane sheet in warm water makes it easy to work.
Step 3
Cut the edges of the spine with the help of a utility knife. You need to break the old glue bond, which will help you remove the spline easily out of the groove.
Step 4
Use a screwdriver to lift the edges of the old spine.

Pull the old spline and caning and put them aside. Before the industrial revolution, the craftsmen will make chairs by threading them into the chair’s holes. After that, they wove the cane strands.

Now place the softened cane on the chair. Overlap the groove about one inch on all the sides.

Keep the pattern in the shape of a square on all the edges. Then take a hammer and slightly hammer it along the grooves on all sides. When you are using a new cane sheet, make sure that the pattern runs across the chair in the up and downward direction, not in a diagonal way. Recheck the pattern when you are pushing the cane sheet into the grooves.

Hammer some other caning sheets or wedges into the grooves. Make sure to maintain the pattern because it loses and slips.
Step 9
Soak the spline in the warm water for about 15 minutes. Soaking the spline in the warm water makes it soft and makes the work easier.
Step 10
Take the carpenters glue and press it along the grooves and press the soft spline around the chair. To press the spline more firmly use a hammer.
Step 11
By using a utility knife, cut the excess cane sheet. Use sandpaper to grind the seat of the chair.
Step 12
Spray the lacquer on the chair. Let the lacquer dry for one or two days before you sit on the chair.
