Using the multimeter, you can check the resistance of the wire. It proves that the flow of current in the wire or circuit is continuous.

Preparing your multimeter

Now it is time to test the continuity of the wire with the help of the multimeter. You need to turn the settings to ohms. The multimeter will show one or OL, that means that the connection is open loop. At this point, the multimeter will measure the resistance of the air. Some multimeters are required to press the continuity button. Usually, the multimeter consists of two ballpoint ends red colour, and the other is black colour. The red colour indicates the positive and the black colour indicates the negative. Now connect the wires by inserting the black one into the COM jack and the red one into the VΩ jack.

Carry out the test

To perform the test set the multimeter to 200 ohms. You should set the ranges at a lower level if you perform on lower resistance components and higher if you are performing on higher resistance components. Then it is recommended to perform the resistance test. If you perform a resistance test, then the value will be 3 ohms or very close to that value. While performing the resistance test, don’t forget to switch off the power supply and remove all the components like bulb sockets.

Take out the wire and connect to the probes. You will get a reading approximately 3 ohms or very close to the value. The circuit needs to be complete to prove the wire’s continuity, and the switch is closed. If you read the value 1, then your wire should have been broken somewhere.
